Peter Sidenius, who later went by Per, was born into a devout Christian family in late 19th century Denmark. He left his home in Western Denmark to study engineering in Copenhagen, where he became involved with intellectual circles of a wealthy Jewish family. Peter seduced the elder daughter of this family, Jakobe. He envisioned an ambitious engineering project involving canals in Jutland and lobbied for its construction. However, his pride impeded his success.
