In the early 1920s Copenhagen, artist Gerda Wegener asks her husband Einar to fill in for a portrait model as she needs someone with delicate hands and feet. Einar agrees and finds himself captivated by the experience of being painted as a woman. This act of impersonation awakens something within him, leading Einar to embrace his true identity as Lili Elbe, a transgender woman. With Gerda's support and love, Lili embarks on a journey of self-discovery and transformation, ultimately becoming one of the first people to undergo gender reassignment surgery in Germany.
The Danish Girl is a historical drama based on the novel of the same name by David Ebershoff, loosely inspired by the life of Lili Elbe. Directed by Tom Hooper, the film explores themes of identity, love, and self-acceptance through the relationship between Gerda and Einar/Lili. Set against the backdrop of the vibrant art scene in 1920s Copenhagen and Paris, it tells a story of courage and pioneer spirit as Lili navigates her journey towards becoming the woman she truly is.
