In rural Quebec during the 1830s and 1840s, Elisabeth d'Aulnières recounts her tumultuous life from her deathbed. The story begins with her first marriage to Antoine Tassy, a wealthy seigneur of Kamouraska. Despite their initial happiness, Antoine's mental instability and cruelty drive a wedge between them. Elisabeth finds solace in the arms of George Nelson, an American doctor who arrives in Kamouraska. Their affair intensifies as Antoine's behavior becomes increasingly erratic. In a fit of rage, Antoine attacks Elisabeth, nearly killing her. Seeking revenge, Elisabeth enlists the help of some villagers to murder Antoine. After his death, Elisabeth marries Jérôme, but she remains haunted by her past.
Kamouraska is a Canadian-French drama film directed by Claude Jutra in 1973. Based on Anne Hébert's novel of the same name, it tells the fictionalized account of a true nineteenth-century love triangle set against the backdrop of rural Quebec. The movie explores themes of passion, betrayal, and revenge through Elisabeth d'Aulnières' tumultuous journey. Despite its historical setting, Kamouraska presents a universal story about the destructive nature of unrequited love and obsession.
