In 1901, Józef Pilsudski (Borys Szyc), a political prisoner at a psychiatric hospital in Russian-controlled Poland, is freed by his fellow conspirators from the Polish underground independence movement. Upon his release, he realizes that he cannot return to his old family life due to the uncertain times ahead. The story then follows Pilsudski navigating through years marked by revolutionary events, violence, and betrayal. He must find a way to maneuver between the conservative passivity of the Polish Socialist Party and aggressive sentiments against invaders that lead to retaliation.
