Trama
The Marquis de Sade (Geoffrey Rush), an infamous writer of erotic literature, is imprisoned at Charenton Insane Asylum due to his unmentionable activities. Despite his confinement, he continues to write his scandalous stories using quills smuggled in by his lover, Madeline (Kate Winslet), a laundry maid at the asylum. The Abbé de Coulmier (Jordi Mollà), who runs Charenton, initially sympathizes with Sade and allows him creative freedom but later struggles when he discovers that Sade's writings are being secretly published and causing a sexual frenzy in France. Emperor Napoleon contemplates sending Dr. Royer-Collard to oversee the asylum, known for his harsh punishments, which could mean the end of Charenton and potentially the Marquis.
