During their childhood summers in the 1970s on the Isle of Wight, neighbors Holly and Marina form a lifelong friendship pact. For troubled Marina, Holly serves as her constant companion amidst her parents' divorce and her mother's Valium addiction. Meanwhile, Holly, feeling frustrated with her overprotective mother and insecure around her attractive friend, finds solace in books. As they grow older, they experience the ups and downs of life together – including sex, love, loss, and rock 'n roll.
